Thekkady is one of the city or town of Kerala situated near the Periyar National Park, the most important point of tourism within the state. The name has been derived from the word “Thekku’ which means teak, the place experiences a pleasant climate throughout the year. Thekkady is situated at an distance of 257km from Trivandrum, 141km from Mdurai, 145km from Cochin International Airport, and 114km from Kottayam railway station. The Sanctuary situated in this city is famous for the dense evergreen, semi-evergreen, most deciduous forests, and savanna grass lands offering home to the many species of endangered animals like Nilgiri langurs. The sanctuary is named as Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary has its linking to the trekking, boating, and jeep safari. The place has been declared as a tiger reserve. The add-on charms of nature and man-made could be seen in this place as the Mullaperiyaar Dam creates an artificial lake across the Periyar River.
